About

My name is Steve Martin, and I am the head wrestling coach at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. Great Bridge Wrestling has a long tradition of wrestling excellence, having achieved tremendous success over the course of several decades. Since its inception, our program has captured 21 Virginia State Team Titles, and 59 of our wrestlers have been crowned individual state champions a combined total of 101 times. I cannot forget to mention that two of our squads (2001-02 and 2002-03) were declared Public High School National Champions in back-to-back years. Now that is amazing!

Each year we begin our season with the same priority, and that is to transition our seniors into the finest colleges and universities on academic and athletic scholarships. Of those student-athletes who are Great Bridge alums and moved on to wrestle in college, eight have earned the prestigious college All-American title, six of those while participating at the Division 1 level.  We will continue to implement program goals to focus on developing student-athletes into champions on the mat, scholars in the classroom, and most importantly to develop future leaders in our community.

How are funds used?

Our needs include but are not limited to, funds for sponsoring athletes faced with economic hardships, equipment, travel, and providing quality wrestling clinicians to our squad. During the 2022-2023 school year, we will compete locally and throughout the Commonwealth to face the top 5 ranked teams in Virginia. Beginning this fall, we will provide invaluable opportunities for our athletes to travel to the wrestling hotbeds of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Delaware, and South Carolina to train and compete in both Folkstyle and freestyle wrestling. Each of these endeavors places financial strain on our club.
